A Welcome Speech from the Dean of the School

At the beginning of the new century, the whole world is witnessing the rapid development of China, both in the economy and in the culture. The sustainable and rapid increase of economy in China surely provides the excellent opportunity for the development of China’s energy industry, which is the most important basis of the total industry, as well as the modern society. It is just the core mission of our school that devotes all of our efforts to strength and develop energy industry of our nation by providing the well experienced graduates and advanced researches in the fields of power engineering and energy engineering.

The School of power engineering is at present the base for cultivating the first level energy engineers and scientists, and also, contributes to the country greatly by its abundant results of the research. The School is equipped with amounts of advanced research and teaching equipments and facilities, more important, we have the well qualified faculties who are dedicating themselves to teaching and scientific research in nearly all branches of the field in energy and power engineering.

DPE takes thermal power engineering, water conservancy and hydroelectric power engineering, materials science and engineering as its main research focuses. Under the guidance of the sustainable development principle, the research activities being undertaken in the School include: new energy source and advanced energy system, fuel cell, the centralized control and simulation of plant, evaluating system of securities and damage of thermal power equipment, equipment condition monitoring and maintenance, energy -saving theory and thermoeconomics, environment engineering, seawater desalination and sewage disposal, materials science and mechanics analysis, nanometer material and technology, fluid machine and acoustics application in power plant, high efficient and low-pollution furnace combustion technique, joint electromechanical system, and so on.

In the long-term teaching and research experience, the School has established a group of professors and researchers with good academic reputation, strong creativity and balanced composition. There are two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, eleven PhD supervisors for PhD, nineteen professors and seventeen associate professors, of which, 40% faculties have PhD degree. There are nine professor enjoy the governmental allowance as “Experts with Prominent Contribution” in the School. Three persons are titled Ministerial Academic Bellwether, eleven faculties are titled with Beijing Young Academic Mainstay and Excellent Teacher.

Every year nearly three hundred students are recruited in the undergraduate program, while one hundred and forty students in the graduate program to pursue Master of Science, twenty students in graduate program to pursue Doctor of Philosophy. They are all important supports in the development of this discipline.

Just during the last few years, the School has finished and being undertaking many research projects and has been honored with over ten awards, such as Prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress, Prize of Provincial Technology and Teaching Achievement. Some researches of our School are also in the active frontier of international research.

With great confidence, DPE will make persistent efforts to carry out the two central works, teaching and research. On one hand, the School should intensify its efforts to train high-level and top-quality people by putting into practice the training mode of simultaneous improvements in knowledge, ability and quality. On the other hand, in response to the establishment of the national system of innovative science and technology, the School should speed up the procedure of industrialization of production of scientific research and contribute to the national economy.
